Origins & Design Heritage
For over six decades, an open-top interpretation of the legendary 5300 GT existed only in the archives. In 1962, a young Giorgetto Giugiaro penned an innovative vision featuring a removable roof panel supported by a striking structural arch—a solution far lighter and more elegant than a traditional folding hood.
At the time, company founder Giotto Bizzarrini was already a titan of Italian motorsport engineering. Widely described by the international press as the “father of the Ferrari 250 GTO” for leading its chassis and aerodynamic development, Bizzarrini had also engineered Lamborghini’s iconic first V12 before founding his own marque. Because Giotto’s focus remained strictly fixed on circuit racing, Giugiaro’s open-top drawings went unbuilt, remaining hidden in the archives when the company shuttered in 1969.
Today, Bizzarrini brings Giotto and Giorgetto’s vision to life as the brand’s first all-new production model since the 1960s. Serving as the vital bond between the marque’s heritage and its future, the Aperta Lusso offers the aesthetic charm of a 1960s icon combined with 21st-century engineering integrity and reliability.
Technology & Luxury in Equal Measure
The interior is a masterclass in Italian luxury, developed in collaboration with Zegna. The instrument panel is sculpted from a single piece of European maple featuring a hand-painted pinstripe, while door panels and seats are hand-trimmed in fine leather and Zegna fabrics. Showcasing the absolute limits of personalisation, the initial ‘La Dolce Vita’ commission features a gear knob crafted from Italian tortoiseshell inlaid with gold details, paired with bespoke Azzurro Gaia pale blue metallic paint with gold fleck inspired by the Ligurian Sea.
Beneath the skin, modern convenience is seamlessly integrated so as not to disturb the period feel. The cabin benefits from air conditioning, MagSafe charging, a concealed sound system interfaced with Apple CarPlay, an adjustable steering column, and premium OEM-standard drop-glass frameless windows for best-in-class weather sealing and low cabin noise at speed.
Powertrain & Chassis Dynamics
The Aperta Lusso is built around a single-piece carbon-fibre composite body. To surpass the torsional rigidity of the original 1960s coupe, Bizzarrini’s engineers integrated an aerospace-grade steel reinforcement assembly into the transmission tunnel alongside a cross-body bar. Two lightweight carbon roof panels can be easily removed and stowed in the luggage compartment by one person.
Under the bonnet, a 5.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 is positioned entirely behind the front axle centreline for optimal weight distribution. Producing well over 400bhp, it propels the Aperta Lusso to a top speed in excess of 175mph through a short-throw 5-speed Tremec TKX manual transmission and limited-slip differential (a 6-speed manual with custom final drive ratios is optional). The engine breathes through a hand-fabricated Inconel valved exhaust system, while modern port fuel injection is carefully designed to visually mirror historic Weber 40DCOE carburettors.
The chassis utilises Le Mans-proven double wishbones with Koni ‘red’ adjustable dampers valved specifically for the car. Cast magnesium Campagnolo centre-lock wheels are wrapped in Pirelli tyres (205/50 front, 255/60 rear) for authentic road feel with contemporary grip. Braking relies on unassisted ventilated discs—4-piston Alcon calipers front and 2-piston Brembo inboard rear—delivering pure pedal feedback. Steering is handled by a modern rack-and-pinion setup with electrohydraulic power assistance that progressively reduces above 40mph, balancing low-speed ease with uncorrupted feedback at speed through a Nardi wood-rimmed wheel.
