The McLaren P1
Debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the McLaren P1 is a lank mark limited-production plug-in hybrid hypercar produced by British manufacturer McLaren Automotive. Following on from the 12C, McLaren’s first modern supercar, the P1 is considered by many to be the natural successor to the McLaren F1. At the time of the launch McLaren cited that such cars would only come along as and when step changes in technology made it possible. In the case of the F1 carbon fibre, and hybrid in the case of the P1.
The P1 has a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive design that used a carbon fibre monocoque and roof structure safety cage concept called MonoCage. Propelled by a 916PS 3.8L V8 hybrid motor, the P1 is capable of covering the sprint to 62 mph in just 2.8 seconds and arriving at 186 mph in a staggering 16.5 seconds.
It was the downforce of the car that was the real game-changer. Producing 600 kgs of aerodynamic grip at 150 mph, the car’s active aerodynamics had to back the wings off to avoid damaging the car’s primary structure.
Its main competitors were the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918, the cars becoming know as the holy trinity by the press, resulting in many collectors electing to buy all three.
With only 375 production units having been built the McLaren P1 was without doubt a huge milestone in the McLaren story and thus a highly collectible motorcar.
